Floating duckweed mats can double their cover on still water in days

Floating duckweed mats can double their cover on still water in days

Duckweeds are tiny floating plants whose fronds multiply by budding so fast that a thin scatter can become a continuous green carpet across a pond within days in warm nutrient-rich water.

The mat shades submerged plants and can swing oxygen levels as biomass rises and decays. Wildlife may use it as cover; managers may fight it when it chokes open water.

Smallest flowering plants can still remake a wetland’s surface. Duckweed turns still water into a living sheet almost overnight when conditions favor boom growth.
