Flash floods can surge through dry washes within minutes of a storm

Flash floods can surge through dry washes within minutes of a storm

In deserts and steep canyons, intense rain can funnel into narrow channels so fast that a dry creek bed becomes a roaring torrent minutes after thunder starts upstream.

Hard ground and sparse plants shed water instead of soaking it. A storm you never feel overhead can still send a wall of muddy water toward hikers and roads downstream.

That lag between distant rain and local flood is why washes kill. Turn around, don’t drown — the channel that looked empty can refill faster than anyone can outrun.
