Fairy rings mark centuries-old fungi spreading underground

Fairy rings mark centuries-old fungi spreading underground

Circles of mushrooms or greener grass on lawns and meadows often trace a single fungal colony growing outward year after year from a buried center.

As hyphae advance, they release nutrients that briefly boost turf, then leave a ring of fruiting bodies or darker soil. Some meadow rings are estimated to be centuries old.

A perfect circle can be a slow calendar. Fairy rings turn invisible fungal age into a habitat pattern anyone can walk around and wonder at.
