Exploding seed pods can fling seeds several meters from the parent

Exploding seed pods can fling seeds several meters from the parent

Some plants build tension into drying pods until tissue snaps and seeds shoot outward — ballistic dispersal without wind or animals required.

Touch-me-nots, witch hazel, and many legumes use variations of explosive dehiscence. A few meters can clear the parent’s shade and start a new patch of habitat.

Not every seed needs a flyer or a fur coat. Stored elastic energy in a pod is enough to give the next generation a running start.
