Ergs are seas of sand dunes that can swallow whole horizons

Ergs are seas of sand dunes that can swallow whole horizons

An erg — from the Arabic for dune field — is a vast expanse where wind-built sand covers most of the surface for tens or hundreds of kilometers.

Only a fraction of any desert is usually erg; much more is gravel hamada or rock, but ergs dominate postcards and travel myths.

Scale redefines “beach.” Standing in an erg means living inside a mobile coastline with no ocean in sight.
