Passing the mirror self-recognition test puts elephants in a small club with great apes, dolphins, and a few other species that show signs of self-awareness.
When marked in a place they cannot see without a reflection, some elephants investigate the spot on their own bodies — treating the image as themselves, not a rival.
The test is debated and imperfect, yet the result still matters. It hints that an elephant’s mind maps “me” in ways once thought nearly unique to humans.
