Elephant pregnancies last about 22 months

Roughly twenty-two months — the longest gestation of any land mammal. Calves arrive large and relatively ready for a social, mobile life.

Long development buys a bigger brain and body before birth. Mothers invest years of care afterward; the clock starts early in the womb.

Patience is reproductive strategy. In a species that lives decades, a nearly two-year pregnancy is the down payment on a long childhood.
