Derechos are straight-line wind storms that can travel hundreds of kilometers

A derecho is a long-lived, widespread swath of damaging straight-line winds from a fast-moving band of thunderstorms — not a tornado, yet capable of flattening forests for hundreds of kilometers.

Cold pools and rear-inflow jets organize bow echoes that surge ahead. Wind surveys after the storm show trees laid down in parallel, the signature of a push rather than a twist.

Straight can still be catastrophic. Communities far from “tornado alley” learn that a blue-sky afternoon can end under a racing shelf cloud and hurricane-force gusts.
