Coastal salt marshes buffer storms while feeding migratory birds

Coastal salt marshes buffer storms while feeding migratory birds

Salt marsh grasses and peat flats absorb wave energy and store floodwater, softening storm surges before they hit inland neighborhoods and farms.

At low tide the same marshes expose mud rich in invertebrates — fuel stops for shorebirds flying thousands of kilometers. Tidal creeks lace nursery habitat for fish and crabs between the grasses.

One wetland does two jobs. Coastal salt marshes link conservation of human safety to wildlife habitats, proving pollution-free nature infrastructure can be green and living.
