Chimborazo’s summit sits farther from Earth’s center than Everest

Mount Chimborazo in Ecuador is not the highest mountain above sea level, yet its summit is farther from Earth’s center than Everest’s because the planet bulges at the equator.

Standing near the equator rides that extra radius; sea-level height and geocentric distance therefore tell different “tallest” stories.

Records depend on the ruler. Change the zero point from sea level to the core, and an Andean volcano quietly claims the crown.
