Buttress roots brace giant rainforest trees on thin tropical soils

Buttress roots brace giant rainforest trees on thin tropical soils

Many emergent rainforest giants stand on shallow, nutrient-poor soils where deep taproots struggle. Instead, wide plank-like buttresses flare from the trunk and spread the tree’s weight like living flying buttresses.

The flanges also help resist wind throw when storms slam the canopy high above. Surface roots and fungal partners then skim scarce minerals from leaf litter.

Architecture solves chemistry. Where soil is thin, trees invent wings of wood to stay upright for centuries.
