Blackwater rivers run tea-dark from dissolved forest tannins

Blackwater rivers run tea-dark from dissolved forest tannins

Leaves and peat leach tannins and humic acids into slow tropical and boreal streams, staining the water the color of strong tea while often leaving it surprisingly clear of mud.

Low sediment and acidic chemistry shape odd food webs: fewer mineral nutrients, more reliance on forest litter drifting from the banks. Light fades fast with depth, so life hugs the shallows.

Dark water is not dirty water. Blackwater rivers wear the forest’s chemistry like ink — a signature of leaf and peat, not of silt storms.
