Biodiversity hotspots pack rare species into tiny fractions of land

Biodiversity hotspots pack rare species into tiny fractions of land

Conservation scientists map “hotspots” where extraordinary numbers of endemic plants and animals crowd into relatively small regions that have already lost much natural cover.

Protecting those scraps can save more unique species per hectare than spreading the same effort across common landscapes. Many hotspots are mountains, islands, or Mediterranean climates with long isolation.

Rarity clusters geographically. Focusing care on endangered habitats inside hotspots is high-leverage conservation — denser biodiversity per square kilometer than almost anywhere else.
