Bats are the only mammals capable of true flight

Unlike flying squirrels that only glide, bats flap membranous wings powered by elongated finger bones — true powered flight unique among mammals.

Echolocation and night niches let many species hunt insects in the dark. Wings double as cloaks, coolers, and sometimes catcher’s mitts for prey.

Mammalian flight is a one-of-a-kind evolutionary win. Soft skin stretched over finger spars turned hands into airfoils that still nurse young.
