An atmospheric river can carry as much water vapor as the Amazon’s flow

Narrow corridors of concentrated moisture in the sky — atmospheric rivers — can transport water vapor comparable to the Amazon River’s discharge, then dump it as days of rain or high-elevation snow.

They form when strong low-level winds align with tropical or subtropical humidity plumes aimed at mountain ranges. Orographic lift wrings the plume into flooding rains on windward slopes.

One plume can refill reservoirs or trigger landslides. Forecasting these sky rivers helps communities brace for either drought-busting gifts or catastrophic runoff.
