A lion’s roar can be heard up to 8 km away

A full roar can carry across savanna for up to about eight kilometers. Lions use that sound to advertise territory and call pride members home.

The larynx and specialized vocal folds produce deep, far-traveling frequencies that cut through wind and grass better than most feline calls.

Roaring is broadcasting ownership. In open country, loud low notes replace fences — and remind rivals that silence can be more dangerous than noise.
