A hurricane’s eye can span tens of kilometers of eerie calm

A hurricane’s eye can span tens of kilometers of eerie calm

Inside a mature hurricane, the eye is a roughly circular pocket of light winds and clearing skies that can stretch tens of kilometers across — a deceptive pause between two walls of violence.

Air sinks and warms in the eye while the surrounding eyewall hosts the storm’s fiercest winds and rain. Satellite loops show the calm core drifting like a hole punched through a spinning cloud engine.

People who walk outside during that lull sometimes mistake it for the end. The far eyewall returns with winds from the opposite direction — a reminder that the calm is the storm’s heart, not its goodbye.
