A blue whale’s heart can weigh as much as a small car
A blue whale’s heart can tip the scales at around 180 kg — roughly the mass of a small car. That enormous pump drives blood through the largest animal ever known to live on Earth.
Some arteries are wide enough that a person could crawl through them. Scale demands engineering: enough pressure and volume to feed muscles for deep dives and ocean-spanning travel.
The giant heart is biology meeting physics. Bigger bodies need bigger plumbing — and the blue whale sits near the practical limit of active mammalian size.
